Journey of cycling in Uganda.

Transforming cycling in Uganda

Cycling in Uganda has faced many challenges over the years. Historically, the sport has been predominantly male-dominated due to cultural beliefs that considered it taboo for girls. As a result, cycling was seen mainly as a men's sport, leaving many talented girls without the opportunity to participate. However, the Uganda Cycling Association (UCA) is actively working to change this narrative and create a more inclusive environment for all.

One of the key initiatives by the UCA is the creation of new clubs that include women under 24 and those joining the elite team level. This effort is already bearing fruit, as evidenced by the success of cyclists like Miria. Recently, Miria made history by winning Uganda's first silver medal at the African Championship in Eldoret, Kenya. Her remarkable achievement is a testament to the potential and talent of Ugandan cyclists, regardless of gender.

In addition to Miria's success, we have also witnessed the rise of Florence Nakagwa, the first female cyclist from Uganda to join a club in Europe called Canyon SRAM Racing Generation. This club is dedicated to supporting more girls to join cycling, highlighting the strides being made to promote inclusivity in the sport. Florence's journey serves as an inspiration to many young girls in Uganda, showing them that with determination and support, they too can achieve great things in the world of cycling.

The future of cycling in Uganda looks promising, thanks to the relentless efforts of the UCA and the support from local clubs and organizations. Special thanks go to the Masaka Cycling Club for allowing me to volunteer as a local filmmaker, along with a few other clubs that have welcomed my involvement. These clubs play a crucial role in nurturing young talent and providing platforms for cyclists to develop their skills and showcase their abilities.

We believe that with continued support and investment, cycling in Uganda will continue to grow and flourish. The progress made so far is a testament to the resilience and passion of the Ugandan cycling community. As we look forward to the future, we remain committed to breaking down barriers, promoting inclusivity, and celebrating the achievements of our cyclists.

Together, we are making strides towards a more inclusive and successful cycling community, one pedal stroke at a time.
